Cottrell Family Will Be New Home Owner

Habitat for Humanity selects the Cottrell Family
Portland Habitat for Humanity Board Members are proud to introduce the family who has been chosen for the groups 11th home.
Christina Cottrell and her three children Angel, Totteeona, and Tucker have been selected to become the owners of Portland Habitat for Humanity's new home. The home is being built on a one and
a half acre lot located on Butler road south of Portland.
The process to become a Habitat homeowner starts with filling out an application, which is then reviewed by a selection committee. Families are interviewed and the committee meets to decide, and then
more interviews. One of the requirements that the family has to meet is to show the willingness to work side-by-side with the Habitat volunteers, helping to build their new home. This is
referred to as "sweat equity". 500 hours of work by the family and their friends need to be applied to the home build.
Habitat for Humanity makes it possible for the home to be built and holds a no-interest mortgage until it is paid for. The family makes a commitment to participate. Then when it is time
for the home to be built the biggest support will come from their family, friends, church groups, and the community. Food is often donated by groups or individuals for the workers while the
home is being built. Volunteer labor helps to keep the cost of the home lower. Local business and community support with fundraising, time, equipment and supplies help lower the cost of
building and material.
When it is actually time for the home to be built is where help from the community comes in. The group can always use a hand on different phases of the home build. Volunteers can work as
much or as little as they would like, even if it is only for a day or a few hours. No amount of volunteer help will be turned away. When everyone comes together it really makes a difference one
family at a time.
This would be an exciting year to become a part of the Portland Habitat for Humanity group.
